During her tenure as a Neonatal Care Nurse for over 18 years, Cindy Salido cared for thousands of premature babies. Having struggled with handmade head supports fashioned from wash cloths and small towels, she often wondered why there was no special device to support the heads of these delicate infants.

Cindy Salido took matters into her own hands and applied her experience and creativity to develop this long overlooked product. She has been awarded a US Patent for her Cinis Preemie Halo™.

Q: What is your background?
Cindy Salido: I have a bachelor of Nursing Degree and have been a R.N., primarily in the neonatal area, for over 25 years.

Q: What in your nursing experience compelled you to develop the Cinis Preemie Halo™?
C.S.: First, let me explain something about babies’ heads. Almost everyone knows about the soft spot on the top of a baby’s head, but actually the entire cranium of the newborn is still “soft” because of the incredible growth that will occur during the first three months. In premature infants this softness of the cranium is much greater and can lead to misshapen heads if the baby is in the same position for a long time. I noticed that many times when parents were finally allowed to take their precious babies home, one of their main concerns was the odd shape of their babies’ heads.

Q: What finally moved you to develop the Cinis Preemie Halo™?
C.S.: Over the years demands on nurses have multiplied tremendously. I found I didn’t even have time to put together make-shift halos or explain to other new nurses their importance. It is very hard to stand by and see the new babies and their parents suffer from a problem that could be easily rectified. I decided to spend my own time and money to develop a sturdy, halo that could be used in hospitals and at home.

Q: Many people have commented about the unusual feel of the halo. What is the material and why is it so important?
C.S.: Cinis Preemie Halos™ are made from a proprietary medical device material. Many years of research dollars went into the development of the material so that it could pass skin contact and biocompatibility tests. The material is FDA exempt. One of the main ingredients is mineral oil which gives it that silky feel and is also beneficial for the skin of a newborn. It can be washed with just warm soapy water and patted dry.

Q: What do you feel are the main reasons new parents should get a Cinis Preemie Halo™?
C.S.: The main reason would be that using the Halo keeps the baby’s head from lying flat on the bed so that he or she does not develop depressions or flat spots. It has been tested and used in hospitals on very fragile preemies and found to be effective. It is lightweight, yet very durable. The Halo is made of FDA exempt material and has absolutely no latex content. It is easy to use and due to the small size.
